OPEN04

GROUP SHOW
16 Sept – 26 Oct
Excelsior Studios

A group show, open to all artists and makers in Park Royal. A chance to come together and show the work of our area, to meet, collaborate, and celebrate.

Park Royal is home to an emerging and vibrant creative scene. A melting pot of influences with hundreds of artists, makers, and creatives working amongst the auto parts shops, industrial centres and dark kitchens of Park Royal. The Parkroyalgallery emerged from these artists as a nomadic, floating gallery concept. Not-for-profit, with the single aim of creating and celebrating art, whether you’re an artist with a studio, working in the joinery next door, or on the factory floor — everyone should be able to show, enjoy, and access art.

Park Royal Gallery has two spaces, the PRG Project Space at Excelsior Studios, and the PRG Gallery at EX2.

OPEN04 is the fourth instalment of the OPEN group show, hosted twice a year, and held during London Design Festival 2023. An opportunity for all artists to show their work, without the barriers of curation or theme. A snapshot of the art and thought created in Park Royal.

The PRG team
Brooke Fitzsimons, Daniella Carlyle, Johnny Brewin, Kazuya Ogino, Gil Wedam

Special thanks to Excelsior Studios for the exhibition space, and the Roundwood Project for locally brewed beers.

  • Jo Chate

    Untitled

    H76 x W61 cm
    Oil on linen

    £4,700

This painting with a nod to the past embodies possible future recollections. It plays with the nature of image construction and perception, layers painted over layers present past and possible futures enmeshed together. This way of working is exploratory - looking, merging, transforming - blurring the distinctions between people, environment, physical and mental space, creating a connectedness and complexities. The elements are re-assembled, they hang in there together ultimately forming a non-linear narrative open to possibilities and alchemy. Jo Chate lives and works in London. She has an MA in painting from the Royal College of Art and shows both nationally and internationally.

    Left Alone

    H66 x W61 cm
Oil and acrylic on cotton canvas

    £800

Juliet E P Gibbs (b. 1996, Somerset) is an artist currently living and working in North West London. She graduated with a BA in Fine Art from Falmouth University in 2018. Gibbs' work focusses mainly on the contrast between the organic and the man-made. The work seeks to look at the direct impact humanity poses in relation to the world we live in, and how nature inevitably fights back. This age-old conflict creates an interesting 'push-and-pull' that we can all observe in the places we live, work and visit.

I am a London-based figurative painter from the Channel Islands. My work revolves around capturing quiet and intimate moments that delve into unspoken thoughts and isolated interactions. Through my introspective approach to painting, I try to create a closed and reflective exploration of my immediate surroundings, offering the audience a glimpse into my personal observations through a small coded window.

  • Lingani

    Fisher Man's wife

    H47 x W39 cm
    Acrylic graffiti on wooden board

    £5,000

This painting is based on the novel 'The Fisherman and His Wife'. One day the fisherman catches a fish, who claims to be able to grant wishes and begs to be set free. The fisherman kindly releases it. The fisherman's wife requests multiple wishes from the fish and in the end the fisherman is unhappy and wishes to live simply again. The painting represents the forms of greed and unhappiness. Inspired by artists such as Geoge Condo, Pushwagner and Takashi Murakami, Lingani explores a unique visual language. Virgil Abloh - who seamlessly merges art, fashion and culture - serves as a significant source of inspiration.

    FACE (pansy)

    H50 x 40 cm
    Oil on linen

    £800

This is from a series of paintings based on human heads and plants. Collecting printed images and my own photographs as references, I start with a tonal under painting, building up the colour and the images with transparent glazes. The human figure reduced to a silhouette, linear architectural forms, irregular natural shapes, luminous colours, are all borrowed from and used to represent the beauty of the physical world.

These works result from different explorations, translations, and moves between text, music and painting. Through quick gestures on the surface of wet oil paint, these asemic writings are stamped still wet on other surfaces (plastic, paper, polyester), overlapping in these works different modes of writing and encoding information such as sign language, scribbling, music notation, punctuation and punched cards for music boxes. When viewed up close, my artwork may appear as a collection of abstract bokeh circles and colors, lacking any sense of coherence or meaning. But as you step back and allow yourself to fully take in the composition, the beauty of the bokeh effect emerges, revealing a hidden silhouette and depth that can only be fully appreciated from a distance.

I believe that the concept of zooming out also applies to our understanding of people and their personalities. Oftentimes, we can become so focused on the individual traits or quirks of a person that we lose sight of the broader context in which they exist.

    £450

I am an Irish artist currently based in London. I am interested in the interconnectedness between people and their surroundings. Growing up in Belfast, I have witnessed how people’s environment intrinsically shapes who we are. I think this has led me to be very observant of how memory, experiences and background can mould an individual, and how we consequently become a product of our own experiences and surroundings. I am interested in how everything fits in with and follows on from everything else; the “woven-ness” of things. Through painting I aim to highlight this ‘unseparation’ between people and everything else.

Is the figure emerging from the stone or turning back into it? Is she seeking comfort in the solidity of this cloudy material? Dorothea works with stone, wood and different media, exploring the tension between traditional materials and a variety of every-day or found stuff. Her installations point towards architectural, historical and environmental concerns. Some sculptures are re-evaluating the human form, investigating our contemporary engagement with the body. £1,250

Growing from Within is a compelling abstract sculpture, its foreboding spikes standing guard, making the journey to its core both a challenge and a curiosity. These defensive protrusions symbolise the barriers and defences we erect in response to the world around us. At the heart of the piece lies an enigmatic void, which, when unlit, dwells in darkness, representing the hidden depths and vulnerabilities we all harbour. However, when illuminated, this core reveals a radiant essence, underscoring the duality of our inner selves and the transformative power of discovery. Victor is a potter and neuroscientist who draws inspiration from nature to create organic forms by pushing clay to its limits. His love of experimentation and play with perception and illusion is rooted in his neuroscience background.

'Painting from my back garden in North Acton of the HS2 construction colliding with nature and home fixtures'. Richardson's works operate in the space between the performance of an action and its anticipated outcome, for example, the smashing of a glass, a character falling in a canal, a breakthrough in communication. His works perform as double acts, facades, and stages ‘that deconstruct everyday scenarios through repetition to the point of absurdity to produce purgatorial experiences of waiting, spaces of absurd nothingness, and the opportunity to navigate uncertainty.’
